70th Anniversary

Eastbourne School of English was established in 1936 and in June this year we celebrated our 70th anniversary.

We had a large marquee in the garden and organised two parties.

The first party was for our students.  Everyone dressed in black and white, like an old film from the 1930’s, and we danced to swing music from the same time.

On the next evening we had a party for our teachers (old and new) host families, friends and representatives of the school.

We also released 70 balloons, each with a tag with a message of goodwill from our students.  The balloons travelled north from Eastbourne and we heard that one landed near Gatwick Airport.

Special Group Courses

This year we have had more groups than usual.

In January we had a group of Swiss students from Wil, following a course to help them pass the BEC Business English examination.

A group of Ukrainian teachers came to us for two weeks in February.  They all teach English to students of metallurgy and architecture in universities in Dnipropetrovsk.

In April we had a group of Italians for just one week from Mariano Comense.  They really enjoyed their time with us and entertained us by singing traditional Italian songs.

June brought us a group from a business college in Burgdorf in Switzerland.

Summer groups include Gianni Sandini’s group from Bassano del Grappa in Italy and two groups from our partners Meridian in Latvia.

In the autumn we will welcome another group of First Certificate students from Wil in Switzerland, accompanied by their teacher Alison Taylor.

Happy Birthday to the Queen

On 21 April The Queen was 80 years old.  And we had a party to celebrate.  We had lots of flags and decorated the Student Lounge and hall in red, white and blue.

We drank a special toast to Her Majesty.  The winner of a quiz about the royal family, Gemma Vega from Spain, was Queen for a day.

Our programme for 2007 is available now.  Just click here for all the details.  We have decided not to change the programme next year so the range of courses will be the same as in 2006.

Staff News

Lindsay Carter is back with us as Assistant Social Organiser, helping James with our Social Programme.  Lindsay will soon finish her English degree and will then train as a  teacher.

We are very pleased that Dean Holdsworth and Holly Nathan are teaching for us again this summer. They have been teaching in Northern Italy, near Lake Garda, and are planning to return there after the summer

Nick Morris has returned with his family from Spain.  He is with us during the summer and will then start a teacher training course.  Good luck Nick!

Mark Hill’s daughter, Honey, was born on 14 February 2006.  Honey has already the visited the school with her mother, Mog.

Glynis Chuter was ill in May and June.  We’re delighted to say that she is now fully recovered and back at her desk again.  Louise Hammond worked extra hard while Glynis was away to keep the office running efficiently.

A Special Goodbye

Hussain Al Makrami is our ‘oldest’ student. He started in January 2005 and finished his course in June 2006.  When he left he organised a party for staff and students and presented the school with a display case of golf clubs.  We wish him luck with his MA course in Portsmouth University in September.

Graham on his travels

Graham White has been travelling to promote the school. So far this year he has been to Ukraine, Switzerland, and Germany.

In September he is off to Turkey to meet new agents.  This event will be organised by Quality English, the association which promotes independent high-quality language schools.  Visit their website at www.quality-english.com for more information about all our partner schools in the QE network.  Graham will also be representing the school at trade fairs in Brighton in August and Berlin in November.
