Accessibility

It is our aim, as far as possible, to make our website as accessible as possible to the widest range of people, regardless of technology or ability.

All web content produced by Eastbourne School of English will therefore conform to level Double-A of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, wherever this is possible. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities. This site has been built using code compliant with W3C standards for XHTML and CSS. The site displays correctly in current browsers and using standards compliant XHTML/CSS code means any future browsers will also display it correctly.

Visual design

This site uses cascading style sheets for visual layout. If your browser or browsing device does not support style sheets at all, the content of each page is still readable.

We do not use frames anywhere on the site.

In general, we have tried to avoid the use of other proprietary publishing formats (eg: Shockwave Flash), browser-specific markup, and other technologies which can create accessibility barriers when carelessly used . We have focused on the use of "open" publishing standards, as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium.

Content

We try to publish all our text content as accessible HTML rather than in other formats such as PDF. Where we do publish PDFs or other formats our policy is to make them as accessible as we can.

Images

All content images used in this site include descriptive ALT attributes.

Links

Many links have title attributes which describe the link in greater detail, and in the majority of cases the text of the link already fully describes the target. Wherever possible, links are written to make sense out of context. Many browsers (such as JAWS, Home Page Reader, Lynx and Opera) can extract the list of links on a page and allow you to browse the links separately from the page.

Some links on the site will open a new browser window (when the link target is on a non-ESoE site). Where possible there will be a warning in the text or in the ‘title’ attribute of the link if a new window is to be opened.

Text size

This site uses only relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified "text size" option in visual browsers, so that you can change the size of the font if you wish to. You can achieve this by following these instructions:

PC/ Internet Explorer 6

From the top menu bar, select View and point to Text size

PC/ Internet Explorer 7

From the menu bar underneath the search field, select Page and point to Text size

PC/ other browsers

Increase text size: Hold down the CTRL key and press +
Decrease text size: Hold down the CTRL key and press -

Mac / all browsers

Increase text size: Hold down the Command key and press +
Decrease text size: Hold down the Command key and press -

We are continually seeking out solutions that will bring all areas of the site up to the best level of overall accessibility. In the meantime should you experience any difficulty in accessing the Eastbourne School of English website, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
